Why the How?

The How - Psychotherapy for now

I thought it might be good to define what I mean by calling this site The How. Hint... Its not because I have all the answers! However, I do think of my work with people as deeply practical in the sense that I hold a space for change to happen, for exploration, practice and knowing to emerge.

Often people arrive to therapy with questions...

How did I get here? How do I move on from here? How could this happen to me? How could they do this to me? How do I live now? How do I begin to make sense of this?

Engaging with the questions, and the not knowing is a big part of therapy. We will work with gently moving towards things that may be uncomfortable and learning to acknowledge and engage with the themes and topics that show up in your life.

How can I love and be loved? How can I be myself? How can I say the things that I need to say? How do I get through another day? How do I release this? How do I change? How do I move through fear? How can I be a better parent, or a better partner?

When I use the term 'psychotherapy for now' what I mean is that in my practice, part of how I think holistically is to engage with the current climate and situation on our planet too. The ideas of psychology have been commodified and used in all kinds of ways, some of which harmful to ourselves and the planet. The way we live and the culture that dominates in the west commodifies and separates both humans from their natural environment, components of wholes into parts and proritises and honours one type of experience or knowledge over another. I think it is important to acknowledge this here as I think that many of the mental health issues we face are the result of the disconnection and separation people experience from themselves, each other and the incredible, diverse, beautiful planet we call home.

A question that I hold is 'how as a psychotherapist can I engage with the issues affecting humanity now?'
